Opening Doors, Building Futures: How The Woodlands at Furman Champions Inclusive Employment

At The Woodlands at Furman, creating a thriving workplace means more than offering competitive benefits or winning awards. It means ensuring that each person has the chance to contribute, grow and feel valued. A key part of that commitment is our long-standing partnership with Thrive Upstate, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people with learning and developmental challenges find meaningful employment throughout the Upstate and Greenville.

A Partnership Rooted in Opportunity

Through our relationship with Thrive Upstate, we welcome candidates who may not follow the traditional hiring path. Instead of applying online, individuals may be referred directly by Thrive, then move through a standard interview process with the added support of a job coach.

This process is specific to individuals referred through Thrive Upstate and is designed to ensure a smooth, collaborative start. A job coach works closely with the individual and our team from day one, offering as much support as needed. Early on, that might mean more hands-on guidance as the person becomes familiar with their role. Over time, the coach gradually steps back as the individual becomes more comfortable in their job, while remaining available as a trusted resource for both the employee and the team.

Individual Support, Tailored Roles

Our goal with Thrive Upstate referrals is simple: to support individuals in succeeding based on their own strengths. When needed, we may adapt a position’s responsibilities or schedule to support that success—whether through modified duties, flexible hours or extra training time.

For example, someone referred through Thrive Upstate might be matched with a role that aligns with their interests and abilities. The position could be adjusted to fit their strengths, with a schedule that offers flexibility where needed. With support from a job coach and thoughtful collaboration across the team, they’re able to settle in, gain familiarity with their responsibilities and feel confident in their work. Creating foundational success can lead to long-term job retention, greater self esteem, dignity and forward momentum in career advancement.

A Place Where People Thrive

These efforts reflect our broader commitment to creating an inclusive and purpose-driven workplace—and the community has taken notice. The Woodlands at Furman was recently named both Best Place to Work and Best Locally Owned Business in the 2025 Best of the Upstate Community Choice Awards, following similar recognition in 2023.

This recognition speaks to the culture we continue to build—one rooted in respect, inclusion and flexibility. As a not-for-profit Life Plan Community, The Woodlands at Furman remains focused on opening doors, removing barriers and creating pathways for individuals to thrive in the workplace.

Applying to The Woodlands Can Turn a Job Into a Career
