A Step Ahead in Greenville: The Active, Walkable Lifestyle at The Woodlands at Furman

“Walking is man’s best medicine.” – Hippocrates

When choosing a retirement community, living in a walkable locale is crucial. A place where the paths are flat, sidewalks are wide and the neighborhood is safe to wander. Plus, having destinations like stores, gardens, parks, coffee shops or restaurants nearby is a significant benefit. Enter The Woodlands at Furman, a haven for those who cherish an active, engaging lifestyle! Our residents enjoy diverse dining options, shopping, golf, parks and cultural venues—all within walking distance of their home.

In this blog, let’s explore the numerous benefits of walking.

The Heart of Health: Physical Benefits

Walking is universally acknowledged as one of the easiest and most effective forms of exercise. At The Woodlands at Furman, our walkable campus and the adjacent Swamp Rabbit Trail make it a delightful and effortless daily routine. Let’s delve into the physical health benefits:

  • Cardiovascular Health: Regular walking strengthens the heart and improves circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Weight Management: A gentle, calorie-burning activity, walking aids in maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Joint Health: Our smooth pathways and nearby paved walking trails offer low-impact environments for maintaining joint flexibility and reducing arthritis pain.

Mental Clarity and Emotional Well-Being

Walking not only benefits physical health but also significantly enhances mental and emotional well-being:

  • Stress Reduction: Whether you’re strolling through our campus or exploring the serene parks in Greenville, walking releases endorphins, reducing stress and creating a sense of calm.
  • Enhanced Cognitive Function: Regular walkers often experience improved memory and cognitive function, crucial for our residents.
  • Social Interaction: Walking together, whether on campus or in the neighborhood, fosters social interactions and strengthens community bonds. The Woodlands’ Walking Club meets regularly for long and short strolls along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, providing a great opportunity for those who are  interested in a more social walking experience.
  • Aesthetic Pleasure: The meticulously maintained gardens, walking paths and the scenic beauty of Greenville enhance the joy of walking.

Accessible Exercise—Just Outside Your Door

Our campus and neighborhood are designed for easy navigation, enabling everyone to fully enjoy their surroundings. Here are some of our favorite accessible walks:

  • Take a short stroll next door to Furman University, whose campus features beautiful, Georgian-style architecture, outdoor sculptures and a 40-acre lake.
  • Drive into Downtown Greenville and enjoy a scenic walk around Falls Park on the Reedy. This is perfect for those who enjoy pausing to people watch.
  • For the more adventurous and energetic, plan for a half-day hike to grab lunch at charming Travelers Rest, a 55-minute walk from The Woodlands on the paved Swamp Rabbit Trail. PS: Residents of The Woodlands love to bike this route as well.
