Art & Aging: The Key to Longevity?

Art & Aging: The Key to Longevity?

Art & Aging: The Key to Longevity?

Whether your tastes lie in Impressionism, Surrealism or finger painting, there’s something your favorite art has in common; the power to extend your life. We at the Woodlands at Furman have done some research on the topic and would love to share our findings with you. Plus, it is in alignment with our creative invitation to our residents to “author your life.”

Art and Health: The Proof’s in the Painting

In recent years, the health benefits of engaging in art have come to light, revealing that art experiences can affect our brains with the release of neurochemicals, hormones and endorphins. Research shows that both creating and observing art can radically improve physical and mental health, making it an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

These positive physical and mental health changes contribute to astonishing statistics. One study by researchers Girija Kaimal, Kendra Ray and Juan Muniz showed that doing just 45 minutes of any kind of art lowered participants’ stress hormone cortisol by as much as 25%. It’s even been suggested by University College London researchers that just one art experience per month can extend your life by 10 years.

Susan Magsamen, in her bestseller “Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us,” coauthored with Ivy Ross, argues that engaging with art is as beneficial as exercise, nutrition and sleep. This perspective is increasingly supported by healthcare practitioners who now prescribe arts engagement to treat conditions such as obesity, heart disease, chronic pain, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, loneliness and depression.

Art within Reach at The Woodlands

At The Woodlands at Furman, we are proud to already offer a variety of art programs designed to enhance the well-being of our residents across all levels of care. Whether it’s painting, drawing, poetry or local museum visits, our community recognizes the profound impact art can have on overall health, longevity and quality of life. Residents also take art classes through the OLLI program at Furman University on topics like woodcarving, traditional and digital painting, outdoor photography, playwriting and much (much) more. Bianca Bosker, in her book “Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See,” highlights the fundamental role art has played throughout human history. Art, she argues, is one of our oldest creations and an essential means of communication that predates even the written word. For many researchers, art is foundational to what essentially makes us human. No other animal makes art.

We now understand that art is not merely a luxury but a basic human need. The art programs at The Woodlands are designed to cater to various interests and skill levels, ensuring that every resident can benefit from the joy and therapeutic effects of artistic expression. From guided painting sessions to collaborative projects, our activities foster creativity, community and well-being. Beginners are reminded that there’s no “wrong” way to make art, which grants them the freedom to step out of their comfort zones and lean into the experience of creation. The best way to approach making art is with a sense of childlike play.

Engaging with art stimulates multiple neurological and physiological systems, involving the entire brain, body, and spirit. It brings information into our bodies and profoundly impacts our biological circuitry, as noted by Magsamen. This holistic activation is unique and contributes significantly to health and longevity.

Art also helps us navigate the complexities of life. It allows us to process emotions, build resilience, and find comfort in beauty and creativity. Our programs are not just about creating art but about experiencing the joy and healing it brings.
