There’s cause for celebration at The Woodlands at Furman—and this time, it’s not just among graduates in cap and gown. During Furman University’s 2025 Commencement weekend, The Woodlands officially “graduated” as a Certified University Based Retirement Community (UBRC), the highest recognition awarded to university-connected senior living communities.
We’re proud to be the first Certified UBRC in the Eastern United States and only the second nationwide. This distinction is awarded by UniversityRetirementCommunities.com, the nation’s leading directory and information resource for communities partnered with colleges and universities.
“As universities and colleges celebrate Commencement nationwide, we are incredibly proud to ‘graduate’ as a Certified UBRC—the equivalent of magna cum laude status,” said Rick Brackett, President and CEO of The Woodlands. “This milestone honors the innovative partnership we’ve built with Furman University and reflects our shared commitment to lifelong learning, intergenerational engagement and the future of senior living.”
What Is a Certified UBRC?
This national certification recognizes retirement communities that go beyond proximity to a university. It goes to those that fully integrate with academic life and student opportunities. Communities must meet five rigorous criteria, including:
- A formal partnership and financial relationship with a host university
- Active academic and cultural program access for residents
- Student internships, volunteer and employment opportunities on campus
- A high percentage of alumni or retired faculty/staff as residents
- A full continuum of senior living services
The Woodlands not only meets, but exceeds these benchmarks. Residents can participate in Furman’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, enjoy discounted access to athletics and performing arts events, receive courtesy greens fees at the Furman Golf Course and engage with students through internships, employment and volunteer opportunities. Nearly four dozen current residents are former Furman alumni, faculty, staff or trustees — a true testament to our deep-rooted connection.
Reinventing Senior Living with Purpose and Connection
For years, The Woodlands at Furman has been recognized as a trailblazer in senior living, blending exceptional care with rich opportunities for learning and connection. We’ve earned “Best of the Upstate” honors eight years running and our locally owned, nonprofit model allows us to stay deeply committed to our mission.
Now, as a Certified UBRC, we step confidently into a new chapter — one that continues to celebrate curiosity, community and campus life at every age.
